Bronze Figural Lion Palanquin Pole Cap

DESCRIPTION: For centuries a common mode of transportation for the wealthy throughout Asia was the palanquin, also called a “palki” in India. These sedan chairs were built to carry one or more persons in an enclosed box or litter which was fitted with long poles. These poles were then supported by hand or on the shoulders of two or more men who carried the palanquin through busy city streets while the occupants rode in comfort. These palki ranged from quite simple to the large, elaborate, and extravagant litters of royalty.

Pictured here is a solid bronze figural pole cap in the form of a lion from a more elaborate palki. This somewhat whimsical lion with front paws outstretched has a long flowing mane and open mouth with protruding tongue. Such decorative ornaments were meant to convey the owner’s status and importance. Dating from the 19th C., this is one of two we have available, and together make a nice pair (see the last photo showing our other listing, BB156). Good condition with wear; part of the rim on the back tube portion is absent. DIMENSIONS: 8 1/4" long (21 cm) x 6 ¼” high (16 cm).
