DESCRIPTION: For centuries a common mode of transportation for the wealthy throughout Asia was the palanquin, also called a “palki” in India. These sedan chairs were built to carry one or more persons in an enclosed box or litter which was fitted with long poles. These poles were then supported by hand or on the shoulders of two or more men who carried the palanquin through busy city streets while the occupants rode in comfort. These palki ranged from quite simple to the large, elaborate, and extravagant litters of royalty.
Pictured here is a solid bronze figural pole cap from a more elaborate palki. This fierce and whimsical horned beast has bulging eyes and an open mouth, complete with fangs and protruding tongue. Such decorative ornaments were meant to convey the owner’s status and importance. Dating from the 19th C., this is one of two we have available, and together make a nice pair (see the last photo showing our other listing, BB155).
