Appealing Japanese Ivory Bear Netsuke, Meiji

DESCRIPTION: A skillfully carved and quite charming ivory netsuke of a furry seated bear with legs crossed and tongue outstretched licking his right paw. The detail on this carving is quite outstanding as even the bear’s canine teeth can be seen on either side of the small extended tongue, and the bear’s fur is carefully and naturally depicted. Meiji Period, 19th C., in very good condition with closed age fissures seen in the walrus ivory on the bear’s back. DIMENSIONS: 1 ¾” wide (4.5 cm) x 1 ¼” high (3.2 cm).
