Engaging Chinese Carved Burl Wood Figure, Qing

DESCRIPTION: A fine and appealing Chinese Qing Dynasty caved burl figure depicting one of the eight immortals, Lan Caihe, the patron deity of the impoverished. Here he/she (has been depicted as each in various times) is shown in his most well-known form as a youth with hair in two top-knots, carrying a bamboo flower basket filled with peaches, symbol of immortality. His left arm is raised holding a peach in his hand, and his delightful face gives us an open smile. The carving itself is made from a beautiful, undulating piece of burl with an overall luscious patina. Dating from c. 1850 – 1900, it is in excellent condition and mounted on a rosewood stand. A collection or museum number, #528, is painted on the underside of the base in small characters (not shown). DIMENSIONS: 9 ½” high including stand (24 cm) x 4” wide (10.2 cm).
