| DESCRIPTION: A fine Chinese stacking food box (or “Tihe”) of rectangular form, comprising a cover and a shallow upper tray above two additional stacked trays, all crafted from luminous and well figured huanghuali. These are set on a base frame of zitan fitted with central side posts flanked by cloud-form spandrels and joined at the top by a humpback handle. The cover is held in place by a brass bar that pierces the two side posts through an interior zitan support under the upper lid. The base frame, tray corners, handle joints and lid cover are reinforced by the original brass mounts. From a fine Florida collection, the box is in good condition and dates from the Qing Dynasty, probably 18th C. See two similar boxes, one of huanghauli and one of zitan, sold from the Robert P. Piccus collection by Christie’s in September 1997. DIMENSIONS: 14” wide (35 ½ cm) x 7 ¼” deep (18.4 cm) x 9 ½” high (24 cm). | |||||||||||||||
