DESCRIPTION: A large, exceptional duan inkstone, rectangular in shape with the top and side surfaces carved in raised relief, depicting scholars in garden settings under pine trees. The top grinding surface has a similar scene of scholars at a table, under which are found three deep wells for holding water. These flow together under the willow tree’s trunk and the bridge, making one large well. At the bottom left corner is a two column inscription in Chinese calligraphy. The underside has been scooped out forming the “legs” of the stone, and on the underside surface is carved a pond scene with six ducks.
Rarely do such fine old inkstones come on the market, and this mid Qing (1644-1911) stone is truly one of the “Four Treasures of the Scholar’s Studio.” CONDITION: Very good with a few nicks and minor chips to the underside legs – very typical for an old stone. DIMENSIONS: 8 ½” long (21.5 cm) x 5 3/8” wide (13.6 cm) x 3 ¼” high (8.2 cm). Weight: 10 lbs. (4.7 kgs.). |
