Fine Pair of Southern Song Dynasty Qingbai Vases

DESCRIPTION: A fine and rare pair of Southern Song Dynasty (1127 – 1279 AD) qingbai vases on integral bases, with a molded six panel floral sprig design, and flared petal-form aperture. The glaze is a very good translucent blue/blue green color, deeper where pooled in the recesses. The underside is burnt orange brown from the firing. With a notable provenance, they bear exhibition labels from the "1953 South Africa National Gallery Chinese Exhibition," and also the "Henry Brown Collection." The vases ring well, distinguishing them from the sugary body types more typical of Fujian; these are of the tighter, more densely grained porcelain from Jingdezhen.

It is interesting from an educational perspective to compare the glaze quality on these very fine vases to other qingbai types, such as qingbai funerary vases. While each item has its own merits, one can appreciate the difference in quality between the utilitarian glaze of funerary items placed in tombs, to the finer glazed altar vases like these. While qingbai glazes run the gamut from very pale (almost white), to pale blue, bluish green, and a pale green with hint of blue, many of the finest pieces are finished in this delicately beautiful blue/green shade. Their condition is excellent: no damage, repair or restoration. There is some fritting to the rims and some small patches where the glaze is "dry," but these are common for such pieces. DIMENSIONS: Size: 6 ¾” high (7.2 cm).
