| DESCRIPTION: An absolutely delightful and enchanting Chinese ivory sculpture of a seated three-legged toad gazing upward with bulging eyes and flattened nose. The bumpy, plump body is decorated with fins around the neck and down the spine, and the toad sits on a base carved as a flat rock. In Chinese folklore, the three legged toad is considered a symbol of the unattainable. The toad supposedly lived on the moon, which he swallowed during eclipses. A famous Chinese tale involves the immortal Liu Hai (Gamma Sennin in Japanese) who lured the magical toad out of a well with a string of coins. Dating from the early 19th C., the ivory has a beautiful creamy patina with hairline age cracks (considered normal for an almost 200 year old piece). An unusual and rare carving, it would command a place of honor in any ivory collection. DIMENSIONS: 4” high (10.2 cm) x 3 3/8” wide (8.5 cm). | |||||||||||||||
