| DESCRIPTION: A fabulous pair of iron abumi (Samurai riding stirrups), skillfully inlaid with gold and silver birds in flight, with each abumi having double signatures of the two metal artisans who crafted them. Dating from the late Edo period (first half of the 19th century), this rare pair are each engraved with the inlayer’s name (Goto Masaye saku) on the front buckle strap, as well as the name of the ironworker who formed the stirrups (Kiheido Kuninaga), found on the bottom of the foot pad (difficult to photograph). It is most uncommon to find abumi with two signatures. The inlaid birds of gold-plated silver and silver cover most exposed surfaces and are quite well done. The buckle loops are inlaid with silver wire, and the bottoms of the foot pads are inlaid with brass in a swirling wave pattern. The red lacquer foot pads are still in good condition with the just the right amount of wear we like to see on true antique abumi. There are some losses to the inlays, we estimate at 15%, and the rust is very minimal. Wonderful to hold and view, this pair will add dimension to any collection. DIMENSIONS: 11 ½” long (29.2 cm) x 9 ¾” high (24.8 cm). | |||||||||||||||
