| Very rare pair of brown glazed bowls from the Baishe Kilns, Nanfeng County, Jiangxi or Jizhou allied kiln, Southern Song Dynasty. These show a strong affinity with Jizhou wares in general shape but they have a very hard and smooth light gray body and even almost Jian type glaze, atypical of Jizhou bowls. These are two of only four I have ever seen. If you have a copy of Mowery’s, Hare’s Fur , Tortoiseshell and Partridge Feathers, this type of ware is discussed in more depth in item 111# which show’s an example of a similar piece but with a white underglaze pattern. The first bowl shown is the best out of the two as it has very warm dark brown honey tones and tea dust quality to the glaze. The characters inside the indented footrim appear to have been “traced over” but the calligraphy above the foot is original. There is one original pit on the side which may be the result of a bubble burst during firing, the second bowl has a darker more even dark color with two simple restorations to the white rim, noted in enlargements i.e., chips filled and touched up with acrylic paint. D: 11cm/4.2in and H: 5.5cm/2.2in. | |||||||||||||||
