| The size of Box: 15 1/8" Long x 3 1/4" Wide x 2" High middle highest. It is most unusual Japanese Roiro(black) Makie Tanzaku Box. Tanzaku is Japanese poem card which were used as writing poem when poet got together. This is storing Tanzaku which tended to warp arch shape naturally so the box was built for the shape of Tanzaku(slightly arch shape). It is very finely made with thin wall all the way around. Inside cover as well as bottom box has beautiful Nashiji works. The top of cover has Mon design of Tsuta(Japanese ivy). Mon design done in gold with fine lines. The Kanji writing on wooden storing box written as Black lacquer Tsuta Mon with Nashiji background Tanzaku Box. The condition of box excellent except noting a couple small spots at top left corner which were touched up (last photo show) and little wear spot on the feet. Other than that box is excellent condition. No split neither hairline crack spot at corner and joint, no warping. Dating from late Edo to early Meiji 1850-1890. | |||||||||||||||
