Maruyama School screen pair - A procession of ducks

An exceptional pair of six-fold screens painted by a follower of the Maruyama School of Art in the late 18th or early 19th century. An incredible array of ducks native to Japan have been described with minute and wondrous detail. Consumate linear techniques define the water and create a fascinating interplay of compositional elements with the billowing clouds. This unique pair of screens revel in the unification of realism and stylization and pulsate with a visual and sensual richness that is not often encountered. The scenes have been painted with ink, color and gofun on paper. The clouds have been formed with sprinkled flecks of gold. The screens have very recently undergone high level remounting and restoration. Each screen stands 67 inches high and measures 148 inches across. The artist's seal reads either Dotoku or Dosen. We have been unable to trace the artist thus far.
