Otagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875) - 'Flowing on and on'

An earlier Rengetsu work of a delightfully brushed ink turtle accompanying a typically elegantly inscribed poem. "For 10,000 generations, Flowing on and on, Giving life to the world -- The pure mountain water, Descending from kameno'o". There is a playful pun on the name of the mountain - "Turtle Tail" - and the turtle painted on the lower left at the "tail" of the flowing water. The work dates to the 1850's. The painting is in good original condition. The image measures 12 inches high by 16.5 inches across. The scroll measures 42 by 18 inches. Translation of the poetry and a letter of authenticity are provided by John Stevens, professor and director of the Zen Art Society.
