| A large Edo period image of a stylized crane centered in front of a rising crimson sun - two of the more distinctive and recognizable symbols of Japan. In the Japanese language, the characters which represent the word Japan (pronounced Nippon or Nihon) literally mean 'the sun's origin' and are often translated as 'land of the rising sun'. Cranes have been central to japanese art and design for many centuries and continue to be so. This powerful juxtaposition of imagery is an unmistakeable and cogent symbol of Japan. The work has been painted on paper with ink, gofun and pigments. It is signed Noritada. No further information has been unearthed. The image measures 40 inches across and 21 inches high. The scroll measures 41 inches across and 61 inches high. Likely dating to the first half of the 19th century, the painting is in reasonably good condition. It was re-mounted sometime during the second half of the 20th century and since that time a few creases have developed. It displays well now or it could be restored by having the painting re-backed/flattened and touching-up the painting. Please contact me in regards to restoration. | |||||||||||
