| Dating to the 18th century this is a rare six-fold screen depicting a bamboo grove on a silver ground. Throughout the orient bamboo is a revered plant and is representative of strength, resilience and flexibility and also has strong associations with summer and the moon. The silver leaf ground of this screen has a most welcome cooling effect during the summer months and also brings to mind the reflections of a brightly shining moon. The spatially open composition allows the slightest traces of breeze to meander through the foliage. The verdant foliage of the bamboo has been painted with a lightly sand-textured pigment. The background has been made by placing hundreds of hand beaten sheets of silver onto the paper screen, their small size and irregular application a strong indication of the screen's age. The silver has oxidized more noticeably on the three right side panels than the left three. The screen has undergone restoration and re-mounting during the later stages of the 20th century. Splits and cracks were repaired and at the bottom of the far right panel we can see some paper replacement and re-painting. The pigments are largely in good condition and have retained their vibrancy. The screen stands 67 inches high and measures 145 inches across. | ||||||||||||||
