| A two-fold screen from the later Taisho period (1912-1926) touching upon the subject of aging beauty. Traditionally Japanese paintings of bijin or beauties didn't convey the personality of the individual, rather they were symbols of a feminine ideal. The powerful portrayal of this older woman and the deep sense of sadness and introspection that she evokes presents a striking, rare and early development in the genre. In addition to the largely Western concept of depicting women naturally, the artist has also used Western painting techniques to lend depth to the subject's face and neck. Painted with ink, pigments and gofun on paper the painting itself is in good, original condition. There are some water marks present around the signature and seal and some slight damage to the pigments surrounding the hinge. One small puncture is also present on her kimono. It is recommended that the screen be remounted - please contact me in relation to this. The work is signed and sealed ............................... Although the artist who created this painting in unknown, it exhibits aesthetic and emotional refinement that equals the work of many well-known artists. The screen stands 70.5 inches high and measures 68.5 inches across. | |||||||||||
