19th century - Chinese goldfish

A small format Chinese painting from the 19th century. Exceptionally detailed and realistically portrayed dragon eye goldfish frolic amongst water plants. In rich orange and reflective black pigments, their rotund bodies and bulging eyes contrast sharply with the graceful movements of their fanlike tails and fins. In Chinese culture the goldfish (jingyu) is the ultimate symbol of wealth and abundance. Jing literally means gold and yu sounds like abundance. Painted on silk the work is in good condition. A few small marks are present and the silk is striated. The plain silk brocade mounting is bearing some creasing. We are unaware of the artist. I have the readings for the Chinese characters (both signature and seal), though for some reason am unable to input them into this field. Please contact me for further information. The image measures 8 by 26 inches. The scroll measures 12.5 by 52 inches.
