A Beautiful Edo Watercolor of a Samurai and a Lady
This is a very fine 18th – 19th century watercolor of a samurai in full armor seated on a small bench at the side of a house. We can only speculate as to what the picture portrays. Our guess is that a samurai is saying farewell to his wife as he departs for a battle somewhere.

The print has a wonderfully balanced composition. The colors are vivid and have no fading. The lady holds a piece of her kimono up to her face and covers the lower part of her face. Only her downcast eyes can be seen. The samurai looks quite happy serious as he tells the lady of what is soon to be. The colors in the room – the shoji screens – the draperies that frame the door – the gnarled evergreen tree just outside the house at the lower part of the picture – and the square tiles that surround the pavilion are all executed in minute detail. The scene is framed top and bottom by bands of gold paint - the color looks as if it might have contained specks of gilt.

The framed picture measures 24” wide by 18 “ high – the watercolor measures 19 ½” by 12 ½”. The frame is a golden painted frame – with some loss of the gold at the right side of the frame. The watercolor is in excellent condition with no foxing or tears. It is not signed and has not been examined out of the frame. We date it to the mid 18th century to the early 19th century at the latest, Edo period.
