This is a handsome small lacquer kogo (covered box) with a landscape design executed in gold makie lacquer. The scene shows a pavilion on a shore shaded by large evergreen trees – the pavilion placed near the opposite shore across a lake. On the near shore is another large tree that appears to be on a small island and surrounded by the stylized waves of the lake. The interior of the kogo is totally decorated in nashiji (pear skin) lacquer – whilst the bottom of the box has more nashiji in a darker shade of lacquer and with the sprayed dots of gold slightly wider apart than on the interior. The kogo measures 3 ½” diameter and is 2” deep. It is in very good condition – only two small frits or nicks – one on the top rim and one on the base. We date the piece to the middle Meiji period, circa 1880s – 1890s. |
