This is a globular shaped Japanese lacquer kogo – covered box – with a lovely decoration in mixed lacquer techniques. The bottom is flat so as to prevent it rolling. The design is that of sand dollars in a variety of shades of gold and silverish makie lacquer. On top of that there are a number of autumn leaves falling – some with red tints to them. Interspersed on and between the leaves and sand dollars are some groups of kiragane – small pieces of metallic foil cut into irregular shapes and then covered with clear lacquer to protect them. This technique dated back to the 14th century and is usually an indication of an older piece. Accordingly , we date this kogo to the late Edo period, circa 1800-1850s. The kogo measures 4” diameter at the waist is and is 3 5/8” tall. The interior and base are totally covered in gold nashiji lacquer. It is in very good condition for a piece from that period. There are a couple of frits on the rims and one short repair to a rim. None of these are obvious when the kogo is closed. |
