This is a very rare and fascinating old Japanese coin purse with a large mixed metal (Shakudo) medallion on the front. The medallion shows a shogun or priest with a young attendant at his side. They are located next to a flowering bush and a full moon or sun shines overhead. At the base of the oval medallion is a handle with small ropes. The overall effect is that of a small mixed metal fan on the purse. There are touches of gold in the metalwork at the bottom of the mans robes on his hat and on three of the flowers. The leather appears to be very fine cowhide leather and the purse is constructed on a hinged bronze alloy frame. The interior of the coin purse has three compartments lined in silk with a geometric design. The piece measures 4 Ό high by 3 ½ wide by ½ thick. It is in excellent condition with no a small slight rubbed area on the left front corner and a 1/8 nick on the edge of the back. The interior is in fine condition just some slight toning from age. The top of the purse has a long silver chain one end of which has come loose but could be easily attached by any jeweler. We date the purse to the late Edo to very early Meiji period, circa 1830 1890s. A rare find in such great condition and with such beautifully made Shakudo medallion. Shakudō is a billon of gold and copper (typically 4% Gold, 96% Copper), mostly designed for its beautiful dark blue-purple patina. |
