A Chinese blue and white scalloped edge dish with a design in underglaze cobalt blue of two four clawed dragons on opposing sides of the rim. They are separated by white clouds and the center is almost a yin/yang design. The dish measures 6 3/4" diameter by 1" deep. There is a mark on the inside of the footed base - not translated. The underside of the piece is somewhat puzzling in that it has a spare design reminiscent of that on the backs of Kraak blue and white dishes. There are six short and thin triangular spikes which coincide with the six dips of the scalloped edge. These are separated by small clusters of five dots in a circular pattern. We date the piece to the late Qing dynasty, circa 1850-1900. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. |
