This is a superb rectangular platter by the Imari potters with a very unusual design of a large Golden Carp in a curled position. A border of geometric designs in green, reds and pale yellow or tan surrounds the fish. The carp itself has slightly raised fins in a low relief. On the back of the platter is a blue underglaze design on the four rims of loosely drawn mountains and a band of tight interlocking half circles circle the foot rim of the platter. In the middle of the bottom of the platter is an extensive set of Kanji characters that translate to "Dai Nippon Hichozan Shinpo" – a marking of Imari during late Edo to Meiji period in Arita. The platter measures 12” long by 9 ½” wide by 1 3/8” deep. It is in excellent condition. We date the piece to the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1840-1870s. |
