| A fine early Japanese cloisonne vase with a very complicated design. It is clearly an early Meiji example because of the many tiny cloisons used to hold the ground glass in place during the firing process. The vase has two large reserves – one a picture of a flower on a blue gin bari ground. (Gin Bari is a use of foil under the glass to produce the shiny effect and was introduced at a later date – this is probably one of the earliest examples of its use). The other reserve is in standard cloisonne and is a design of a multi colored iris on a light blue ground. The rest of the vase has this complex design of florets and designs surrounded by many tightly packed small cloisons on a back ground. The base has a band of vertical lappets. The vase is not signed – it is in excellent condition. We date it to the period of 1860-1880. | |||||||||
