A Late Qing Carnelian Brushwasher

A fine carnelian brush washer in the shape of a lotus leaf with three buds. The detailed carving of the stone shows each bud and vein clearly and the bottom shows - and sits on - the stem of the leaf. It measure 5" by 3 1/2" by 1/2" deep and is in excellent condition. It has been carved quite thin so that the natural beauty shines through the translucent body of the brush washer. We date it to the 19th century, Qing dynasty. Carnelian, a red or reddish-brown variety of the mineral chalcedony, is regarded as a semi-precious gemstone
