An Oribe Rectangular Dish – Meiji
A slab molded Oribe dish dating from the late Edo to early Meiji period. The top of the dish has been glazed with a tan glaze and then had a muslin cloth imprinted on it. The characteristic dark green Oribe glaze was then applied to the sides and dripped down towards the base of the dish. On the bottom, the dish is unglazed and has an unusual feature of parallel stripes that were made either with the potter’s fingers or a spatula type tool. There is a potter’s mark in an ovoid cartouche – however it is too faint to translate. The dish measures 7 ¾” long and is 6 ¾” wide with the slab formed sides 1 ¼” high. It is in excellent condition - we date it to the period 1850 – 1880s.
