A Black Stone Bust of Daruma - Meiji

A very unusual bust of Daruma carved in a sold black stone – we are not sure whether it is basalt, coal or jet. Suffice it to say that the exterior of the stone has a rough surface but the base and the face of Daruma have been polished to a very smooth high gloss. The piece measures 4” high by 2 ½” wide by 2” deep and is in excellent condition. There is a small linear flaw in the stone that runs from the eyebrow through the right eye. We date the piece to the early Meiji period – circa 1870-1890.
