| A rare form mid-19th century Chinese cloisonné covered jar with twin Imperial - a border of hanging tassels and a rare silver top and base. We are pleased to offer this rare form mid-19th century, though possibly older, Chinese Cloisonné Twin Imperial Dragon Covered Jar. It is shaped as a globe form on a tall raised pedestal - the form and workmanship are quite unique. Even more unusual, the top insert and bottom appear to be silver, or at very least silver plate! The previous owner was a long time collector of Chinese and Japanese cloisonné and had only encountered silver/silver plate in two or three Chinese cloisonné pieces. The extremely bulbous, archaic form jar is beautifully decorated with two, multi-colored five claw Imperial Dragons contending for the sacred flaming pearl. Noteworthy, is the artist's use of a rarely seen deep kiln red for much of the dragon's body. The repeating tassel forms have been enameled in alternating greens and yellows, decoration usually found in early mid-19th century pieces. The flat, recessed top has been wonderfully enameled with a single Imperial dragon, writhing his way completely around, with the sacred pearl separating him from his own tail! Beneath the lid, a silver, or silver plate insert is found, as well as a silver fastener holding the finial. Likewise, underneath the base appears to be silver, at least several inches into the stem. The piece stands eight inches tall and five inches at the widest. The piece has the usual mid-19th century pitting, mostly around the two primary dragons, though much less so within the dragon. There is also some firing unevenness around a small area in the upper shoulder. That said, the condition is wonderful for a piece that is 150 years, or more, old. | ||||||||||||
