18th Cty Chinese Cinnabar Marriage Box

A fine Chinese carved lacquer cinnabar marriage box with the symbols for double happiness on the top. Each corner of the top lid has a different floral design within a ruyi shape. The center of the lid has a very complex flower design of four single peonie flowers surrounding a two flower spray on a stem of leaves. The sides are decorated multiple floral designs in reserves and four reserves - one per side - with Buddhistic symbols. The piece dates from the 18th century - circa 1750-1800. Excellent condition with one old minor restoration that is almost impossible to find. The box measures 7 1/2" square x 3 1/2" high. An excellent example of early Qing dynasty carved lacquerware.
