| These very rare incised lacquer cup rests are made of Tixi lacquer wherein the surface is deeply carved through multiple layers of red and black lacquer. (The Japanese refer to this technique as nuri guri). Each dish has a design of eight ruyi scrolls surrounding the raised middle that would have held the small cup. On the bottom rim there are ten ruyi heads that miror the design from the top. The pieces average 5 1.2" diameter and are slightly over 5/8" tall from the bottom of the dish to the top of the outer rim. Excellent condition - a very few areas where the lacquer is slightly checked as is normal for Ming Dynasty tixi lacquerware. We date these from the mid to late 16th century. Recent sales of Ming Dynasty Tixi lacquer have regularly been bringing prices of $5,000 and up at the major auction houses. | ||||||||||||||
