| A great Korean Late Choson Inlaid lacquer box and cover circa late 19th century. This handsome box is made of the typical Korean brown lacquer. It is beautifully decorated with two dragons chasing a flaming pearl amidst clouds. The decoration is masterfully inlaid with mother of pearl forming the top scales of the dragons and the scrolling clouds, sharkskin stained in two different colors used for the softer scales on the underbelly and claws, and finally tortoise shell for the dragon tails. The dragons' eyes are inlaid in brass with black horn pupils. There's also twisted brass wires that are used for further cloud decoration. This box is truly an exemplary piece from the late Choson period Korean lacquer works. It is in Great condition with a brass piece missing from one of the dragon's eyes and a small crack on the bottom bowl as shown in one of the photos. It measures 9" in diameter by 7 1/4" tall. Similar examples have sold at Christies and Sothebys auctions in the $4,000-$6,000 range this past several years. | |||||||||
