This white jade wine cup is from the Chinese Ming dynasty. It is called chrysanthemum cup ("Ju Hua Bei" in Chinese) which was used on September 9 of Luna calender each year. It is a rare form with a pair of extra large flower handles. Originally large gem stones possibaly were mounted on the top of each handles. Someone may mistaken this kind of chrysanthemum cup as Mogul style from the later Qing dynasty. This cup is actually a typical Ming cup based on the cutting, polishing technique used and the carving details in style. There is natural fissures in the stone, which is common to see imperfections in Ming Jade, because of historical reasons. The cup is in good condition with no chip or restoration. It measures 12 cm from handle to handle, 6 cm diameter, and 4 cm height. Aquired by the last owner's family in the 1920's. Provenance information available upon request. |
