BLACK LACQUER FUMIBAKO BOX

Showa period, 20th century, Japan. approx. H 5cm (1.96in), 13 x 24cm (5.11 x 9.44in)

So minimum and so refined black-lacquered letter container (fumibako) with such noble detail of quite delicate silver moulding at the lid-edge and string-hole. It looks very simple make at first sight, but it would have taken a very long times to be finished by extremely skilful craftsman. Erasures for the name at the backside.

Rare antique bear’s teeth used by the Yao/Mien ethnic group in Guangxi Zhuang, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos during in Daoist ceremonies by Dao Guang priests. These would have had bells attached to them were used to “call in the spirits”. An example may be seen in Jess Pourret’s book: The Yao, plate 570, pg 207.
