Sold, Thank you
A young woman in rare western dress gazes across this early to mid 20th century Bijinga scroll signed Ikko (Furutani Fujio, b. 1891) enclosed in a period wooden box. Her bright western dress and short hair must have made quite an impression in conservative Japan. The silk painting is bordered in green brocade embellished with flowering vines, extended with beige and features bone rollers. The scroll measures 21-1/2 x 52-1/2 inches (54.5 x 133 cm), and is in fine condition. Fujio was born in ...

Small bag for transporting an conch (hora) shell. Finely knotted silk threads, made into a shippo design. AN OVOID BOTTLE WITH RUSSET GLAZE, JIN DYNASTY, 12TH ~ 13TH CENTURY.

Classic wine bottle with flanged neck, decorated with two stylised birds in flight. The contrast between the iron-oxide decoration and glaze is not pronounced as the bottle has fired to an attractive russet hue, a rarity in itself. The unglazed foot exposes a light and coarse body that indicates that this bottle comes from one of the Cizhou kilns.

9.1/8 inches high. Perfect condition, no chips, cracks or re...

The Creme de le Crème of our recent additions of 20th century Ceramic artists, here is an amazing vase by the most sought after of all Japanese potters, Kawai Kanjiro, enclosed in the original signed and stamped wooden box dating from the late 1950s. The stately composure of its dramatic silhouette is surpassed only by the vivid profusion of colors splashed free-form across the dark glass surface. Red and green in lightening flashes of wax resist glazing seem to speak of an excess of energy c...

One of the most interesting vases I have seen by this potter, quite striking in appearance, with brick colored dashes struck briskly through the dark molasses of the vase. Under the glaze we can see the artists signature Jomon rope impressions pressed into the clay. The Jomon pattern (the Jomon were ancient peoples of Japan whose pottery was typified by rope impressions) is what Tatsuzo is most famous for. The vase stands 10-3/4 inches (27.3 cm) tall, and is 4-1/4 inches (11 cm) across the sh...

A GOOD CHINESE QINGBAI BOWL, SONG DYNASTY, 10TH ~ 12TH CENTURY.

This is a museum quality bowl moulded with phoenix and flowers within a liewen border. Thin porcelains were difficult to fire without distortion and the potters overcame this by firing the bowl on its unglazed mouth rim. The glaze is also known as ying-ching, shadow blue, and with this ware colour is almost everything. This example exhibits a pale icy blue colour pooling deeper in hue at the edges and within the design. The gl...

6.7/8 inches high. Basically in fine condition though the monster masks may once have supported ring handles. The foot-rim is slightly distorted upwards in one place. <...

An absolutely brilliant winter landscape by Edo period artist Sumie Buzen (1734-1806) dominated by impossible crags and radical trees, a single pagoda the only evidence of man in the artists mad world. Ice glimmers white on the limbs of scattered brush across the barren winter scene of tumbling cliffs, the white roofs of the tower cupped in a hand like jumble of stone. However all serves as backstage props for the twisted tree clinging precariously to the edge of the precipice at bottom right....
