This quilt is made out of an old Japanese nobori banner probably from the Meiji period (1868-1912). The upper part of the banner, where the family crest (Mon) is dyed, was used for the border and two figures were sewn together side by side. The brown fabrics on each side of the design are the reverse side of an old obi sash. All hand-sewn except for the straight line where the panels were put together.

The plate depicts two dragons contesting a flaming pearl, all within an unusual wave border. The back is decorated with auspicious symbols and within the foot-rim is an apocryphal Ming Chenghua mark within a double circle. The design is in Chinese taste as befits porcelain for home consumption and, at just over ten and one half inches diameter, it is a decent size.

It is not unusual to find English porcelain from the 18th century with designs copied from Chinese originals. More rarely encountered are Chinese porcelains with designs after European prints or produced to order with European designs. It is unusual indeed to come across a Chinese export plate which is a direct copy of an existing English ceramic design, in this case the 18th century Worcester ‘Pine Cones’ pattern.

A beautifully written tea room scroll by 19th century calligraphist and seer/soothsayer Yokoyama Marumitsu (1780-1854) bordered in pale green brocade and featuring bone rollers. The calligraphy is very expressive, dark lines varying dramatically in width as they curl down the wide sheet. The travelling shrine contains a sculpture of a figure in a boat, probably Benten. Below the plinth a former owner has preserved a lotus petal. Edo period, early 19th century.

6.1/4 inches ( 16 cm ) high. The case has some loss to the lacquer on the base and at the back of the roof. The hinge on the bottom left has lost its pin. Some losses to the sculpture, please study the photographs.
