A finely detailed miniature from Kishangarh, this painting has the lyrical quality that characterizes much of the work from this area in the state of Rajasthan in India. Two delicate figures sit in the foreground within an elaborate setting of cushions, flowers, arches and windows, all rendered in tiny intricate designs. Both are richly dressed and heavily jeweled. They gaze into each others eyes before drinking a toast, he from a bowl, she from a tiny cup. This idealized scene, influenced by M...

This early 20th century bronze Buddha holding a kalasa, the vase of abundance, has a quiet simplicity. The figure wears an unadorned monk's robe and sits on a tall waisted throne of double rows of lotus petals, typical of Burma's Ava Period. Other Ava attributes seen on this Buddha are the triangular face with a small bow-shaped mouth, the band between forehead and hair, and the slightly forward lean of the body. A departure from the typical Ava presentation is the placement of the hands (mudra)...

A rustic jar with stylized designs on a rich blue/green glaze, this 19th century Chinese utility ware evokes a time when even the most humble items were hand made with artistry. Three freely brushed sketches of flowers and calligraphy decorate the sides of the vessel; the top has three abstract foliage designs. Uneven coverage of the turquoise glaze adds to the jar's earthy appeal. Brown glaze covering the interior indicates it was intended for use as a storage urn. Made of coarse, heavy clay, i...

Immediately identifiable from the walking staff, beads, begging bowl and bald pate, he was thought to live in the forest and possess powers to protect against theft and fires. This one, with his enigmatic half smile and mild expression, appears to harbor some secret knowledge. The carved wood figure, gilt over dark reddish brown coloring, stands on a waisted...
