A pair of lacquered iron abumi (Japanese stirrups) decorated in fine gold and nashiji (pear skin) lacquer on a roiro urushi, black lacquer ground. Each carries a Tokugawa aoi crest (three hollyhock leaves in a circle) within scrolling leaf background, the bottom constructed with wood pieces within an iron frame which made it lighter, thus gave a better control. A JAPANESE BIZEN STONEWARE FIGURE OF HOTEI, 19TH CENTURY.

Hotei, leaning on his treasure sack, his head resting on his upturned arm, seems to be enjoying a quiet snooze. The modelling is excellent, even his unshaved chin is depicted. Bizen stoneware is self-glazing, the unglazed surface vitrifies at the exceptionally high temperature achieved by the potters in the kiln. This makes for a very hard body that resists chipping and wear.
