Kogo or incense box in the shape of the God of Good Fortune Hotei, leaning on his treasure bag with a fan in his hands. Earthenware, Raku ware with black glaze and white slip. Japan, 20th century.
H ca. 1-½ inches; W ca. 2-¼ inches.
Traces of usage: two cracks in the cover, some chips in the cover and two tiny chips on the edge of the lower part, consistent with usage and the softness of the material. Otherwise good condition, charming piece.

Rather unusual zenibako where the fittings seen on the box are typically done in iron, the fittings of this zenibako are carved from the wooden pieces that are used for this box. The top section of the box contains the characters: Kin Senryo, or 1000 Ryo of Gold and underneath the lid is a lacquer decoration of a Tensho period gold coin. DESCRIPTION: This vintage eight-sided Japanese platter is raised on a square foot with blue underglazed geometric designs covering the flat interior and with chrysanthemums scattered over diagonal cross hatching around the raised edges. Perfect condition with no chips, cracks or repairs, and dating to the first half of the 1900’s; maker’s mark and collector’s stickers are on the back.
