A serene reclining Mandalay Buddha that dates to the 1960s is carved of dense Burmese teakwood. Contrasting with the sleek, smooth lines of the dark reddish brown teak is a robe richly adorned in intricate swirls that were carefully crafted of thayo, a lacquer thickened with bone ash that is used with great expertise by Burmese artisans. Finely carved with great character, the handsome head of the Buddha with bow-shaped mouth, full outlines lips, almond-shaped eyes, serpentine eyebrows in relief and oval urna on the forehead.
His hair arranged in rows of small curls.
The domed usnisa surmounted by a cintamani.
This splendid sandstone piece dates back to 12th century.
Dimensions are 13In (33cms) height of the head alone.
