This is a Korean Coin Chest (Tonkwe) used by a 19th Century shop owner. Paper money did not exist in Jeoson Dynasty Korea, and the coins were of very small denominations. They had to be strung together in large quantities to have any worth, so a strong money box was obviously a necessity. Small coin chests like this were designed for use in shops. 19.25w x 13.5d x 8.75h inches, 49w x 34 x 22 cm.

Rare Korean Antique Chest Made Entirely of Fine Exotic Paulownia Wood. This is the only all-paulownia chest we have ever had. Paulownia is a fine wood and is used only for very small boxes, such as inkstone boxes, with the exception of this fine chest and the occasional rare example. Paulownia is desirable for its insect-repellent and fire-repellent qualities, its light weight, and its beautiful widely-separated and dark grain. An extra special and personal touch and an intimate history is added... Click for details
