Although sanggam wares were produced for only a relatively short period (from about 1150 to the beginning of the Mongol invasions in 1231), the simple design of this example suggests that it is among the earliest of such inlaid celadons. Slightly later pieces usually exhibit greater sophistication in form and more complex and ambitious decoration. A celadon cup of lovely form with a grey-black splash across the body— resembling and roughly contemporaneous with the Chun Yao (Jun Yao) purple splash wares of the Chinese Song Dynasty— although this is a distinctly Korean cup, the grey-green color familiar to us primarily in slightly later Koryo sangaam (inlaid decorated) wares.
