A fantastic pair of Chosun Dynasty Korean "grand father" guardian statues from Jeju Island. Made of local volcanic stone, dating back to the 19th century. These figures were traditionally placed in pairs and, according to legend, anyone who rubbed their noses would be blessed with fertility and the birth of a son.

ROOF TILE OF CASTLE

Heavy roof tile used for castle, excavated from Gyeongju in Korea. Three Kingdoms - Silla.
Unusual form for the roof tile, with such characteristic letter-like design at center.
At backside, 'Excavated in April, Taisho 2 (1913)' hand-written by the Japanese excavational research group.
No fatal crack as seen.

A small Korean bronze votive statue of Buddha dating to the Unified Silla dynasty (7th to `10th century), the bronze has two cavities on the back of the figure together with a protruding peg for the attachment for a now missing aureole which is typical for these early images. The statue was probably originally gilt and has wear appropriate for its great age but otherwise is in good condition. The height of the figure is 11 cm.

Sculpture of a bald headed man with a serene face, sitting while holding a small cymbal and drum stick in his hands. The cymbal and stick are connected to each other by a cord. The man dressed in Korean garment, as it is worn by Boddhisatva. Lime stone? Inside hollowed out. Korea, Choseon period, 18th century.
Height inches 14.2 inches (36 cm).
Excellent condition. Some pits in the surface, some traces of former pigmentation...
