This boldly colorful kabuki theater image features an actor portraying Soga Goro, one of two historic samurai brothers who avenge the death of their father. A Japanese Woodblock Print by Kuniyoshi. 1847/48 Edo Period 13 3/4 x 9 7/8 ins. (35 x 25.2 cms) This rather gruesome design was published by Koga-ya Katsugoro in 1847/48. We are unable to identify the story and the actor is not named on account of the Tempo Reforms which forbade the naming of actors on prints. However, the Kabuki going public would recognise the actor by his features. The print is in good condition, there is some surface soiling and some thinning of the paper around the edges.... This is a very fine early woodblock print of a Kabuki dancer by Utagawa Kuniyasu (Japanese, 1794–1832). It is done in muted tones of pale yellow, blues, tans and a very faint pink (on parts of his garment). (The small yellow rectangle seen in the upper right corner of a few of the photos is an unfortunate reflection of a ceiling light while taking the photos.) The actor is shown in a very dramatic pose with his arms outstretched and ready to fight. His eyes are crossed in the Kabuki pose known a... Click for details
