A Japanese Osaka Woodblock Diptych Print by Yoshitaki 1860s Edo Period
14 5/8 x 9 7/8 ins. (37.2 x 25.2 cms) This chuban diptych is by the most accomplished of the later Osaka designers, Yoshitaki. His work is much influenced by Hirosada. The design is a scene from a play based on the Tales of Genji, the devices on the background are the genji-mon, each one of which denotes a different chapter in the book. A Japanese Woodblock Print by Kuniyoshi from the famous Taiheiki Series. 1848/49
14 1/4 x 9 5/8 ins. (36.3 x 24.5 cms) This dramatic and vigorous design, numbered no. 20 in the block (no. 45 in Robinson), is from one of Kuniyoshi's most celebrated series, Taiheiki Eiyu Den (Heroic Stories of the Taiheiki). The series was published by Yamamoto-ya Heikichi from 1848 to 1849. The scene shows Tatsugawa Sakon Katsumasa pointing angrily to his right attended by two retainers in armour.
