This is a fun woodblock print by the famed Edo period woodblock artist, Kunisada(Toyokuni III). It is titled “Nango Rikimaru With Cut Foot” and is from Kunisada’s Comic Pictures Series. The print portrays a samurai dancing around on his right foot as he examines a cut or puncture wound on the outside of his left calf. He is next to a shoreline with gently breaking waves and a paddle lies on the ground next to him. There is no indication how he got the wound. ... Click for details

This is an intriguing print by Kunisada as it portrays a Geisha seated waiting for someone – apparently a samurai – as she hold the samurai’s sword in her two hands wrapped in a bundle of straw. One can only guess as to why she is holding it for that person.
