Japanese Woodblock Print by Hiroshige, 1840/50s Edo Period. 12 7/8 x 4 1/4 ins. (32.6 x 10.8 cms) This kacho-e (bird and flower design) was originally part of a harimaze print which were divided into panels which were intended to be cut up. Although it is a classic Hiroshige image the print is in very poor condition. The paper is very toned and faded with some cracks in the paper and it has been backed to stabilise the print. A Good Japanese Kakemono-e Vertical Diptych by Kochoro Kunisada. Edo Period. Ca. 1833 26 1/2 x 9 ins. (67.3 x 22.8 cms) This charming design shows a girl in festival costume wearing a hat similar to that worn by medieval courtiers. In the background is cherry blossom and peonies. Kakemono-e (scroll pictures) were vertical diptych which were the poor man's scrolls and were usually mounted as such. A Good Japanese Kakemono-e Vertical Diptych by Shunsen, Edo Period. Ca. 1815/20 Assembled size 29 1/2 x 9 3/4 ins. (74.9 x 24.7 cms) Shunsen (1762- ca. 1830) studied under (among others) Katsukawa Shun'ei. In 1823 he gave up print design to become a porcelain painter. This large and striking portrait is of a courtesan in her ceremonial robes.
