This is a large Bira Bira Kanzashi, a dangling hair ornament dated from the 1920's . They were typically worn as an adornment by maiko. They are decorated with the most auspicious motif of Japan , Sho- chiku - bai which are Japanese pine, bamboo, plum blossom and flying crane on top which indicates that this kanzashi is used for the new year and that is usually associated with celebrations . Details on the crane, pine needles, buds and petals of plum, all are done beautifully.

This is Ise Katagami , stencil around 1800 ( Edo ). This special katagami was only made in Ise, Mie prefecture to make kimono patterns. Multiple layers of thin washi paper are bonded with a glue extracted from persimmons, which makes a strong flexible brown colored paper. The paper is cut carefully by a skillful artisan. This is one filled with dragonflies which seem to be resting on lily pads in the water . A few connected areas got separated and there is some wear around the edges and wrinkle... Click for details

This is an Ise Katagami stencil from the late 1800's . This special katagami was only made in Ise, Mie prefecture to make kimono patterns.
