A Fine Japanese 17/18th. Century Ceremonial Copper Sake Kettle
Diameter 6 1/8 ins. (15.6 cms) Ht. with handle up 9 1/2 ins. (24.2 cms) This fine kettle was made for a Shinto wedding celebration and is finely engraved with longevity symbols such as bamboo, pine and cranes. The design feature the tomo-e mon (crest), a stork mon on the back handle fixing and an elaborate mon underneath. This extraordinary antique Japanese “ornamental” tetsubin (iron kettle) is strongly cast and beautifully decorated in high relief with blossoming branches set into deeply recessed irregular panels. This uniquely-designed Japanese iron tea kettle (tetsubin) with its silver inlaid handle has been cast in square form with a paulownia (kiri) leaf and flower forming each of the four sides. Early 20th century; unsigned. It was likely made in Nambu, part of northern Honshu, an area famous for the purity of its iron ore. A brass tea scoop dating from the later Edo period etched on the outer surface with flowers, and originaly lined with applied gold. The gold has largely worn away, leaving a shadow of color on the edges and center. Gold was originally used on tea utensils as it was believed that if it came in contact with poison the gold would change color, thus saving the participants from danger. A very elegant Japanese sand-cast iron tea kettle and brazier (furokama, fuuro-kama) of unusually small size (making water for one person).
