This striking red and black carved nuri guri lacquer round box with cover is an incense storage container called a kogo. Meiji period, early 20th century. The swirling design on the cover is deeply cut through several layers of red and black lacquer, as are the lappets surrounding the edge of the bottom section. The inside is finished with black roiro-nuri lacquer, a technique wherein the highest quality black urushi lacquer is applied and polished in several layers. ... Click for details

The size of Natsume:@2 7/8" Dia x 2 15/16" High. Beautiful Japanese Makie Natsume. It is made with wooden body with Roiro background. It is very unusual finish with fence and wild Shida design and cloud of gold and reddish finish. There are strip of finish brown tone. Inside is done in Ginji(silver) finish, but little bit has reddish color. It is signed with artist on the back. The codition of Natsume excellent, no chip, no crack and no hairline.
