The size of Kikyoku: 11 3/8" Long x 10 13/16" Deep x 10 7/16" High. This cabinet called Kikyoku which is used for Sencha Tea Set keeping. It has black roiro lacuqer as well as reddishi lavender finish. The front door has Kiku(Chrysanthemum) design done in gold makie. The way closing the door is lift the door and set in. The size of Tanzaku Bako: 14 15/16" Long x 3 1/8" Wide x 3/8" High ( 38 cm x 8 cm x 1 cm ). Very nice Japanese Tanzaku Bako (poet board box) by Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942). It is done by Shunkei Nuri(brownish glossy lacquer over wood). The bamboo leaf design by gold lacquer. The condition of box excellent, no Kizu(flaw), no repair and no warping. The spot seen in the photo is from the corner got blackish finish, urushi harden. No Tomobako. There is Sekka's signature on lower left of Tanzaku Bako.... Click for details

A fine lacquer ”kogo” - incense box. The lid is decorated with a humourous, playful ”shishi” - lion biting into a bowl; a red ribbon around it. The shishi is rendered in low relief golden lacquer with the eyes, thungs and claws inlaid in mother of pearl on a background of black and nashiji lacquer. Signed Wajima Genpo saku. Inscribed kiri-tomobako: Shishi makie kogo Wajima nuri. Diameter: 8,5 cm. Meiji. Condition: perfect.

In tea ceremony there are many tools found using lacquer embellished with mother of pearl. The preferences have been seen since the Edo period in the 17th century but may have been used in earlier styles.
