The size of Natsume: 2 5/8" Dia x 2 3/4" High. Very unusual Japanese Roiro Natsume, lacquer tea caddy. Natsume was made with wooden body decorated the design of Kiri Mon. Two kiri mon (paulownia crest)design front area and one on the back side. Inside rim as well as inside cover has gold takamakie work with the design of wave and flower design. A handsome set of seven Japanese red and black mokuzuke - the tops done in shiny black roiro and the bottoms done in red lacquer. On the bottom of four of the bowls there is a design in makie gold of a bamboo shoot. The seven dishes measure 4 1/2" diameter and are 1" high. The dark black would have been a lovely contrast to the raw fish normally used in the mokuzuke serving. We date these to the mid Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1925-1950s. This is a truly fabulous Japanese lacquer kogo (covered box) with a wonderful design of six of the creatures so beloved in Japanese art – the Dragon, the Shi Shi, the Kylin, the Tiger, the Elephant and the Baku. The different creatures are executed in makie - raised relief gold lacquer – on a ground of shiny dark black lacquer – called roiro.
