This elegant split bamboo flower arranging basket (“hanaire” or “hanakago”) is beautifully plaited in the form of a double gourd or “hyotan.” Meiji/Taisho period, early 20th century. Two large delicate bamboo pods rest on a sturdy support frame of twisted tree roots and branches, likely wisteria. These rustic gnarled wood pieces provide a lively contrast of textures to the irregular “midare” plaiting of the traditional gourd shape. A handsome set of seven Japanese bamboo mukozuke that have been lacquered with a dark rust brown lacquer. The seven dishes measure 3 1/4" long by 2" wide by 3/4" high at the ends. The dark lacquer would have been a lovely contrast to the raw fish normally used in the mokuzuke serving. We date these to the mid Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1925-1940. They are in excellent condition.

One of the rarest and most important baskets to come up for sale. Black with a very large handle that separates into five pieces for portability, a fine complex weave and intricate crayfish motif. This unique wooden tray was expressively hand carved from a single piece of wood in the form of a fragrant citrus fruit or citron known as “Buddha’s hand.” Meiji period (1868-1912). The front is carved to realistically portray the long curling “fingers” of the fruit, with a budding fruit handing from the leafed stem at the top. A fine embroidered purse, probably made to hold tissues at a tea ceremony. The exterior is embroidered with Sagara embroidery (Peking knot), and has a sarasa design of stylized butterflies, birds and flowers. The sarasa (Indian Chintz), first came to Japan through the Nanban trading in the late 16th century and was tremendously favored by the tea masters and some daimyo (regional lords) during the Edo period.
