An oblong ikebana basket with wide bamboo strips woven in an open-hexagonal pattern, its handle formed of twisted rattan. This purse-shaped ikebana basket has the appearance of leather, its fine bamboo slats dyed a rich, plum color in keeping with the style of bamboo master Waichisai. This large elegant Japanese flower basket (“hanakago” or “hanaire”) has been very finely plaited and woven with varied thin strips of split bamboo. Dating to the early 20th century (circa 1900-1930), the bottom is marked with a three-character signature of noted artisan “Shokushosai." Suzuki Shokushosai was an active basket maker in Tokyo during the first three decades of the 20th century. This is a wooden Nure- gaku (Ita- gaku) , nure means wet, ita means wood, gaku means frame , and they are signs typically hung from the eaves outside tea houses ,this one is from 1930s.
It has 3 kanji characters “ Haru Ta Zo “ written in the cursive style, simply means place where there are many springs . A rare-form bamboo ikebana basket on a round pedestal base, its forked
handle securely attached to the body, supportive wraps and insect
stitching along its sides. The basket is composed of superb detailing
- mat plaiting, twilling, interlocking v-knots and metallic
fittings. Contributing to the rarity of this basket is the beautifully
